Who We Are

Founded in 1939, The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, nonprofit rehabilitation center dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired people live independently. The Lighthouse serves approximately 7,000 people each year and is a member agency of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast. The goal for all Lighthouse programs is to provide opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals to appraise their interests, capabilities, and attitudes so that they can participate in a variety of rewarding educational, vocational, and leisure activities. The Lighthouse aims to enhance the general welfare of the blind and visually impaired by broadening public understanding and acceptance. The Lighthouse receives financial support from a variety of sources including donations, the Lighthouse Foundation, United Way allocations, government contracts, industrial product sales and fees for services. A board of directors oversees all Lighthouse funds, while an appointed president manages the day-to-day operations.

Become a Volunteer

The Lighthouse offers volunteer opportunities for every schedule. Some activities such as home visitors require a weekly commitment, others such as special events are as flexible as once or twice a year. In addition to working with individual volunteers, The Lighthouse works with schools, churches and community groups to arrange special volunteer opportunities for their members. All volunteers are required to complete an application and to attend orientation. Volunteers are a vital part of the success of The Lighthouse of Houston.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, contact Deborah Ramos, at (713)284-8473 or dramos@houstonlighthouse.org.

Become a Donor

At The Lighthouse of Houston, we believe that the next century will bring many challenges and changes to the way society views the blind and visually impaired. Securing a promising future for the blind and visually impaired of Houston will require the combined efforts of Lighthouse professionals, dedicated volunteers, and perhaps most importantly...generous donors who recognize the importance of investing in the future of the visually impaired.

The Lighthouse of Houston wants to ensure that the blind and visually impaired lead successful, productive, happy lives. You can be a part of these developments and changes, bringing light into an otherwise dark world.

Your gift will take us significantly toward that goal. Thank You!

LOCAL ATHLETE RACING TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE LIGHTHOUSE OF HOUSTON

HOUSTON (October 11, 2005) - When Houston athlete, David Vialard, lines up for the start of IRONMAN Florida, he won’t be competing just for himself - he’ll also be raising funds for The Lighthouse of Houston, the non-profit organization for the blind and visually impaired. The 2005 IRONMAN FLORIDA consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run in Panama City Beach, Florida on November 5, 2005.

Vialard is fundraising as a part of the Janus Charity Challenge, an innovative program designed and sponsored by Janus Capital Group, the leading investment management firm in Denver, Colorado. The program acts as a catalyst to motivate IRONMAN athletes to use the race to increase awareness of and raise money for the charity of their choice. In the program’s first three years, triathletes raised more than $4.5 million for hundreds of charities.

“Janus is proud to continue to offer this exceptional program because it engages more people in meeting the critical needs of their communities. The incredible commitment of athletes like Vialard is a true testament to the caliber of IRONMAN athletes and helps to drive more awareness and support for the nonprofit organizations throughout the country,” says Janus Sponsorship Marketing Director, Casey Cortese. To inspire athletes to participate, Janus makes additional contributions to the beneficiaries of the top fundraisers at each of the full distance U.S. IRONMAN races.

Vialard is asking for community support in his fundraising efforts. To make a contribution, go to http://active.com/donate/imflorida/vialard and click on Make a Contribution, or visit www.januscharitychallenge.com, click on How to Donate and enter “vialard” in the Search for Athlete name field.

On race day, you can track David’s progress LIVE on www.ironmanlive.com.

THE LIGHTHOUSE UNVEILS NEW DIMENSION IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY WITH THE HELP OF HP GRANT

Houston, TX (February 9, 2005) – The Lighthouse of Houston, the non-profit education and rehabilitation center for the visually impaired, was granted nearly $13,000 from Hewlett-Packard to development and implement a community outreach program targeting individuals over age 60 with limited or deteriorating vision. After months of preparation, The Lighthouse Traveling Computer Lab, the first of its kind in the nation designed specifically for visually impaired persons, is ready to begin service in the community. The Lighthouse Traveling Lab consists of four flat screen monitors, wireless keyboards and portable desk top units equipped with adaptive software programs, including JAWS, a speech output program that reads text to the user, and ZoomText, a magnifying program that enlarges the text.

Lighthouse staffers took The Lighthouse Traveling Computer Lab on its first trip to Southside Baptist Church Conroe to introduce mobile computer workstations equipped with adaptive software to 13 visually impaired Conroe residents. During the specialized training workshop, visually impaired seniors learned basic computer tasks such as composing emails, surfing the Internet, managing finances and the accessibility features built into Microsoft Windows and Office XP. In addition, seniors were informed about free websites that offer magnifying downloads, for example, http://magnifier.sourceforge.net/ and http://inspiredcode.net/4BMXP.htm, as well as other inexpensive resources available at The Lighthouse such as Internet and E-mail training classes and various Microsoft program courses. While JAWS and ZoomText software can usually cost anywhere from $800 to $1000 plus the cost of computer equipment, The Lighthouse Computer Learning Center offers fully equipped workstations for only $16 per one four hour block of time.

Along with a number of technology training courses, The Lighthouse also offers additional support services including recreational therapy, diabetes education, low vision rehabilitation, adult day care services and support groups for the blind and visually impaired.

“The Lighthouse is excited about the new community outreach program,” says Kim Thomas, Rehabilitation Specialist at The Lighthouse. “We feel this is an important step in promoting The Lighthouse’s commitment to assist older persons with visual impairments live fulfilling, independent lives by utilizing technology.”

The Lighthouse Outreach Team plans to visit additional local retirement homes and churches in Houston and the surrounding areas and will continue to schedule introductory presentations. If you or someone you know is interested in the having the Lighthouse Traveling Computer Lab come to their organization for an introductory presentation of the adaptive software available to visually impaired persons including purchasing information, support groups available and other inexpensive resources for the blind and visually impaired, please call us at 713/284-8473.
