By providing increased access and training for the blind and visually impaired, The Center creates new opportunities for the visually impaired and responds to the needs of existing programs and services. Strategic relationships, such as those The Lighthouse has fostered with Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Commission for the Blind, United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, Houston Community College, Houston Independent School District, and the National Vision Cooperative, will continue to expand as well. The Center for Education and Adaptive Technology: 1) Unites all Lighthouse programs, services, and administrative functions in a central campus, providing easy access to all resources. 2) Creates an educational institution that enhances the learning experience and is easy to navigate. 3) Accommodates state-of-the-art technology for the blind and visually impaired to allow for expanded educational opportunities and training programs. 4) Expands by offering extended hours and new products in Reflections, The Lighthouse Store, a specialty store offering adaptive aids such as computer hardware and software, talking clocks, Braille watches, mobility canes, and movies with audio descriptions woven in.
