Founded in 1939, The Lighthouse of Houston is a private, nonprofit rehabilitation center dedicated to helping blind and visually impaired people live independently. The Lighthouse serves approximately 7,000 people each year and is a member agency of the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast. The goal for all Lighthouse programs is to provide opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals to appraise their interests, capabilities, and attitudes so that they can participate in a variety of rewarding educational, vocational, and leisure activities. The Lighthouse aims to enhance the general welfare of the blind and visually impaired by broadening public understanding and acceptance. The Lighthouse receives financial support from a variety of sources including donations, the Lighthouse Foundation, United Way allocations, government contracts, industrial product sales and fees for services. A board of directors oversees all Lighthouse funds, while an appointed president manages the day-to-day operations. | |||||||||||||||||
